Merry Christmas!
A year ago today I was with my mother hours before my father was to pass on his favorite holiday. Tonight we will honor his memory by following his Christmas Eve traditions at our house within our small family.
I love you Dad! I hope you, Joe, Leo, Father Paul and Father Jerry are on the fairway between clouds eight and nine. I hope you look down with an occasional smile at the family you have lead with the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Merry Christmas to my entire family, both here and in Heaven!

The Genius Club (2006)
That's a great premise and is the basis for the film The Genius Club. The execution of that premise, however, does not reach the potential of the idea.
One thing I've noticed lately, especially in low-budget flicks, is that if you're going to shoot police procedures, you'd better get it right. With such great shows like Law & Order and NCIS and various other movies, efficient and believable police procedural processes have been drilled into out collective consciousness over the years.
There are a couple of times where The Genius Club ran into believability issues on how the police and/or secret service handled the task at hand. Sometimes it wasn't the writing, but the acting or the budget limitations that undermined the action. Either way, it showed me just how important accurate and believable police work is in a film, especially since it's become second nature to all of us.
The cast includes a lot of talented actors (Stephen Baldwin, Jack Scalia, Tom Sizemore and Tricia Helfer) who did quite well with their roles, especially Helfer. Helfer, better known as the main, sexy cylon on Battlestar Galactica, is exceptional as a genius dying from cancer. Her performance is real and heartfelt.
The lesser known performers in the story, however, are hit and miss, often missing at critical emotional times.
The biggest issue with The Genius Club is that the answers given to the questions are not very enlightening. I could have come up with most of them and, as my family can attest, I am no genius! With such a premise, I really expected to be blown away.
The film, distributed by Cloud Ten Pictures (which made the Left Behind films), is being marketed as a Christian film, but in reality it barely touches on the existence of God or Jesus. It does some very nice work on the value of forgiveness, but this film is barely a true Christian film... at least in my interpretation of what a Christian film should be (and I'll be the first to admit that it is a completely subjective interpretation).
Finally, I didn't feel that the production value matched its budget. It was obviously shot on video, which isn't the issue, but the lighting was dark and muddy. The audio, at times, was distorted, especially when characters were yelling. So, there were some basic production issues that I think would not normally arise on a film with a reported two million dollar budget.
The film kept my attention and, in many ways, worked. But for the Christian film fan, you may not find this Christian enough. And for the secular film fan, there may be too many production issues to keep you from enjoying the film.

Crossing the Goal
There's a really good, interesting and fast paced show on EWTN. You heard that right!
I love EWTN's content, but the execution is what I call "talk radio for the elderly." This wouldn't be so bad if the media the information was being presented in weren't television. So, when I stumbled across a new half-hour show called Crossing the Goal, I was very impressed.
The show is moderated by Brian Patrick (host of the Son Rise Morning Show on Cincinnati’s Sacred Heart Catholic Radio) and is co-hosted by Peter Herbeck (Vice President and Director of Missions for Renewal Ministries), Curtis Martin (President and Founder of FOCUS - Fellowship of Catholic University Students) and former Saints coach and pro-player Danny Abramowicz.
The first thing that caught my eye was the intent. The show is good for everyone, but is primarily geared toward men, which I found refreshing.
In that vein, the second thing that caught me was the concept. They designed the show to look like a cross between a sports broadcast and an informative, quick and sharp panel discussion. They take the half-hour format and split it into three quick sections.
The first part looks like a sports broadcast, like when the ESPN football analysts talk about their thoughts on the weeks games. However, on Crossing the Goal, they're not talking about sports, they begin the show as a panel discussion about the theological topic at hand.
The heart of the show is really found in Herbeck and Martin's excellent and timely analysis of the content and their ability to communicate it in ways that effects us today.
The second part of the show, called Game Plan, is where Herbeck and Martin really shine as they talk about how to incorporate the subject into our daily lives.
The third part of the show, called Red Zone, is a more informal discussion about the content with everyone involved.
The show is professionally produced, very well conceived and executed, full of great information and has lively, interesting discussion.
If you get a chance, watch or DVR Crossing the Goal. Or you can watch previous episodes online at their website www.crossingthegoal.com. We need to get the word out about this show so that its influence and success will continue to grow.
Really good stuff.
You're a Patient Lot
So help me out.
If you see spelling and/or grammatical errors, don't be afraid to drop me a note so I can correct it. I know my Mom is already salivating at the chance to correct me even more... she's been doing it my whole life! Thanks Ma :)
The last thing I want is my grandchildren to look at these blog entries and say "Wow, Grampa was an idiot!"
Okay, they'll probably say that anyway, but I'd rather it be because I earned it, not because I typed it.

2005 in Book Form
Using Cafe Press, which I used to create the Goin' Out to Cally books, I created the first volume of the hard copy of Surviving in Safety Harbor which covers the entries in 2005. Since each book is limited to under 500 pages, I've had to break them into numerous volumes. Volume 1 will include 2005. Volume 2 will be half of 2006. Volume 3 will be the second half of 2006. Volume 4 should be able to fit 2007. And Volume 5 should be able to fit all of 2008.
Below I'm holding a test copy of Volume 1.
Since, in 20 years, my kids and grand kids won't have any idea what a blog is, I designed the front cover as a blog entry.
The back cover is a mock-up of a web page that is used to enter blog entries.
Not the greatest designs from a mass selling perspective, but since they're for personal use only, I liked this design better.
If you're a masochist, like my brother Paul, you can order a copy online at the Sonlight Pictures store. I can only sell one book at a time, so as soon as my Volume 1 copies arrive I'll be removing it from the storefront and uploading Volume 2... and so on.
Okay.
I'm still amazed people read it so much. Nice, but odd. :)

Blog Entry 949b
The reality is I am just burned out. Completely. Sonlight Pics is another full time job and I have no creative juice left in the tank most days.
- I will still be waxing poetic over at the Sonlight Pic blogs about film and faith.
- The pics I used to post here will be on Facebook.
- Only my rants about life and politics may be lost in the shuffle.
Paul, you mentioned being interesting in buying one (why, I have no idea)... you can get one at the Cafe Press Sonlight Pictures store. But you'll have to order soon. I can only upload one book at a time and I'll be replacing the 2005 with the 2006 in the next week or so.
Like my Goin' Out to Cally book I created from the blog entries about that trip, I'll also be creating one called Surviving in Safety Harbor: Tales of Woe about my entries relating to Crohns and Dad's passing, among other things. Those stories won't be included in the yearly books.
So, is this blog really dead? Maybe not dead. In a coma... perhaps. Away on vacation, probably. Dead... we'll see.

Blog Entry 949
Traffic and participation on the blog has been decreasing over the past six months. Most people now communicate, email, share pictures and stories on sites like Facebook. Maintaining this site while keeping up with Facebook and the other Sonlight Pictures websites has become too burdensome for me.
So, I want to thank all of you who have been visitors to this site, especially my Mother who has been the most consistent participant since the beginning. To all of you, your support, love and participation the past three years has been truly wonderful. It's been great to reconnect with old friends as I've documented the changes in my family and the growth of my faith.
This blog started out as a way to become a disciplined writer. It has succeeded. And through the process I have been able to share stories like my trip to California, my humorous struggles with Crohns and the amazing, last week of my father's life.
It has been a privilege to share these experiences with you and I hope you have received as much enjoyment reading them as I did writing them.
I hope you have a blessed Christmas and a fulfilling, faith-filled life.
May God bless you all.

Busy
DC was in a wonderful one-act at school last Friday. It was very funny and she was exceptionally good. We were so proud of her. Amazing to see my little girl all grown up. :)
Gabe's baseball has been going well. He joined a local travel team where they play on larger fields and all of the baseball rules are in play (leading off, stealing, etc.). It's been a wonderful learning experience for him and he continues to improve.
Dea decorated this past weekend and the house looks great, both inside and out. She's such a workhorse and really attentive to detail. When you walk in the house you can't help but be fully immersed in the Christmas spirit. She's awesome.
Tim and his girls came over to watch the Gators trounce the Tide for a shot at the National Championship. Yes "It's Great... To Be... A Florida Gator!"
Finally, my Mom stayed with us a few days. I just love having her over. We always have so much fun... so many laughs. Her laugh is contagious. Plus, she's my mom! I love just spending time with her. That probably makes me a mama's boy, but I'm okay with that.
Now that I'm finally over two consecutive colds, I'm hoping with some more quality sleep and a little more focus, I can get a lot more accomplished, especially on the Sonlight Pictures front. I'll let you know if we do anything of note.
BTW - Bucs vs. Panthers tonight. Hope its a good game.
Have a great week, everyone.

Post Thanksgiving Blows
When given more than two days in a row off from work, my body immediately leaps back into my late-night mode. Thanksgiving weekend was no different. I reveled in post-midnight movie watching and pre-brunch sleeping patterns.
I am feeling the pain today, however. This morning I was forced to pry myself out of bed at 5:15 a.m. in order to get my daughter to school on time. Having gone to bed at midnight didn't help. Having acquired my wife's new cold didn't help. Having awakened numerous times during the night didn't help.
How bad is it? I just bought a Mountain Dew. Before 8 a.m.
That's a bad sign. That's always a bad sign.

What I Am Thankful For...
I am thankful for...
- My faith - It has grown and evolved to depths I never knew could exist within me. I still have such a long way to go, but the journey has been wonderful.
- The Sacraments - The more I understand my faith the more I appreciate the divine made available to us via the Sacraments. They are God's never-ending gifts that inspire us to greater lives.
- My family - My wife and children are the center of my earthly universe and they, along with my extended family, show me God's love every single day. What a blessing to have so much love from so many people.
- My mother - She is so strong, so independent, so funny and so spiritual. She is an inspiration to me.
- My faith community - We are so blessed at our church to have close friendships with a very large number of faithful, learning, humble Catholics who do their best to understand and live their faith everyday. We are all on our own faith journeys and together, we give each other strength and guidance during trying times.
- My job - I have always worked hard not to take my employment for granted. Every morning I thank God for allowing me to have an income and health insurance. Even when there were times where it was hard or difficult or unfulfilling... it is and always will be a gift and I do my best to treat it as such.
- Making movies - I am so thankful the Lord has allowed me to use the gifts he has given me to praise his name in such little ways like Club God and Purgatory, USA. I feel like I am finally fulfilling my responsibilities as part of the greater Body of Christ.
- My home town - I love living in Safety Harbor. It's like a small town in the middle of a big city. The people are nice, everything is in walking distance and the families we've met through Little League are top notch.
- And most of all... God's mercy - I am such a broken man... I am the definition of imperfection in light of God's true perfection. I have so many flaws, so many repeatable moments of weakness and lack of holiness. I don't nor will I ever deserve God's mercy, yet He continues to provide it. This humbles me to no end.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, safe and blessed Thanksgiving weekend.

Family Movie Night
Last night we took in the feature remake of the Get Smart series. I remember watching Get Smart on re-runs as a kid. It was funny in a silly 60's sort of way, as a spoof on the James Bond/I Spy type stories. The original actors, starring Don Adams and Barbara Feldon, have been replaced by Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway.
The movie, also starring Dwayne Johnson and Alan Arkin, does a good job of updating a 60's series while still maintaining its overt silliness. The story, though completely unbelievable, is still entertaining with the goofy world of the film.
Carrell and Hathaway are really wonderful as Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, respectively. They have a believable chemistry that brings much needed heart to a purposeful piece of fluff.
The family and I laughed throughout and had a wonderful time.
It's rare that you can find a movie that is both entertaining for the children as well as adults. When you find one, like Get Smart, you appreciate not only the film, but the time you get with your family that watching the film has provided.

Dear Anonymous
I've been blogging here for over three years now, putting my thoughts down, my feelings and my theories covering subjects from illness to faith to the various stupid things I do.
Recently, when I've stated some thoughts I had about Obama or the election or faith and politics, I've received some very interesting feedback in the comments section... good feedback, thought-provoking feedback, usually in opposition of my stance, but worthy of discussion, none-the-less.
However, almost all of these differing views are inputted by the vague and faceless person called Anonymous. Either the person(s) didn't want to sign up for a blogspot login or didn't want to put their real name at the bottom of the comment or they simply forgot to sign their name... whatever the reason, their viewpoint is "personless." And, in my mind, valueless.
So, from now on I'm going to ignore any comment(s) left by Anonymous based simply on the fact that my ideas have a name and a face and yours do not. As a matter of fact, I'm going to delete all future Anonymous comments left on my blog.
Hey, if you want to disagree with me, awesome! I love a good debate. That's the way my father raised me. But, if you're not willing to attach your real name to your comment, then I can only surmise that you don't really feel that strongly about it and it's not worth reading.
So, Anonymous, where ever you are, feel free to stop by and read all you want. But, if you want to participate, at least have the courage to put your real name to it.
Otherwise, don't let the virtual door hit you on your way back out to the internet.

The World We Believe In
They're worried about his socialist policies, of which he comments on but never denies. They're worried about infringing on the first and second amendments, on redefinition of marriage... on a lot of things.
A lot of Christians are praying about this election, hoping the society they know stays anchored in traditional values and faith. They're worried that America is turning into the countries we once fought... Russia and China.
I too have been praying, a 54-Day Novena for the Lord's will to be done during this election. And I've been worried too. But, as I was praying one day, it occurred to me that none of those concerns really matter.
Sure, they matter as far as the country and potential aborted lives and potential religious persecution... which are real issues and real concerns.
But a government's stance on anything has nothing to do with personal salvation.
Christianity was born in the Roman Empire... an Empire where slavery was common, pagan worship the norm, murder was for entertainment, orgies were a diversion, and perversion was commonplace.
The salvation of mankind is not bound by imperfect, human kingdoms or policies. It is universal, it is catholic and it is free from mans laws.
No matter what the outcome of the election, our responsibility to our beliefs, our life of faith has not changed.
Whether the FOCA is passed or not, women every day will be faced with a moral decision on whether to kill their own child or not.
Whether we are capitalist or socialist, people every day will be faced with the moral decision on whether money is their god, or Jesus.
Whether the definition of marriage changes or not, couples every day will be faced with the moral decision to remain faithful to their spouse or not.
Governments may change. Leaders may change. Social mores may change.
The Ten Commandments do not.
Jesus' teachings do not.
The magesterium of the Church does not.
So, have faith and trust in God, no matter the outcome of this election. Because, in the end, it doesn't change the focus of our own faith journey.
It may change the path, but the destination remains the same.

A Shoulder
So many of my daughter's friends rely on her for advice and help. I told her this is an honor. She must represent to them someone who does not waver, who speaks their mind and who will be honest with them.
Still, it leaves my daughter with an interesting conundrum. If your primary relationship with someone is as their unofficial therapist, their go-to shoulder to cry on, does that make you friends or just acquaintances?
I don't know if it's my acting training or just my personality, but I've always found other people's lives far more interesting than my own. I love asking questions and finding out about their lives. I shared with her that, because of this, especially in college, I too was the go-to shoulder to cry on. I can't tell you how many people came to me after a break up or major life event to share their feelings with me.
I didn't mind it for the most part. I LOVE helping people. It's one of the few times in life you feel like you're actually doing something worthwhile, something that matters. I felt extremely blessed that they would trust me when things were so bleak and it was nice to be able to offer some assistance, even if that meant just listening.
However, this conversation with my daughter did get me thinking... I realized that many of the relationships I have with people, from work to church and everywhere in between, is really based on me listening to their problems and that's about it.
Many of these people I consider friends. However, it occurred to me that if I didn't ask them about their problems, they probably wouldn't interact with me at all. So is that really friendship? Doesn't friendship require equal interest and equal interaction by both parties? Or maybe the majority of the relationship has revolved around the therapist/patient dynamic, but that doesn't mean true friendship isn't in there somewhere.
My daughter asked me what to do. I wasn't really sure.
I suggested she step back and see who steps forward. That doesn't mean she won't help when needed, but it may offer insight into how they view their relationship with her. If they only come to her when they need a problem to solve, then she'll know. If they come to her out of genuine interest in her, then she'll know.
After talking with her about it I realized I should probably do the same thing.
True and lasting friendship is a two-way street. It'd be nice to know which way the traffic is heading.

Another PUSA BTS Interview
The fifth behind-the-scenes interview of Purgatory, USA is now online. In this interview I talk about the inspiration behind the creation of Episode 2 and how we must always place Jesus first in our lives.
Family and Fire
We turned off the computers, the television, the video games and just hung out on our back patio, chatting, laughing and enjoying each others company. I cooked on the grill while Dea whipped up some stuff in the kitchen, then we all ate on our patio table, enjoying the cool breeze.
We ended up spending about three hours out there, stoking a small fire in our portable fire pit, talking about school and religion and friends and faith. DC played on the guitar and Gabe interjected his unique brand of humor.
It was exactly what I needed. A nice, comforting night surrounded by those who love you most.

Voting Your Faith, Not Your Party
I thought about that a lot. Our nation has become so polarized. We are more interested in identifying with a party instead of with a faith. When Christianity first started, its revolutionary strength was that it was not bound by class or money or slave or master. It made everyone equal in the eyes of God and in the eyes of each other.
We should take that stance as voters. We are not Republican or Democrat. We are Christians. And we should vote in accord with our faith, not according to party.
In that spirit, I came across a great video that spoke to that exactly. It's short and really powerful.
Check it out.

Socialism is Great!
Like a 1950’s TV show. JOHNNY, JIMMY and JAMIE enter the house, dressed in Halloween costumes. Johnny has the largest bag of candy, Jimmy’s bag has some candy and Jamie’s bag is completely empty.
The children are greeted by Johnny's mom, GRACIE.
GRACIE
Hi Johnny! Home so soon?
JOHNNY
Yeah! I worked so hard that my bag is full already! I’m halfway to my goal. I'm going to empty it and go back out there.
GRACIE
Who are your friends here?
JOHNNY
Well, I was getting so much candy I asked Jimmy to help me and, if he did, I'd pay him with some of my own candy.
GRACIE
(looks to Jamie)
And who's that?
JOHNNY
That's Jamie. He hasn't gone trick-or-treating yet. I told him that when I go back out, if he helped me, I'd pay him with some of my candy too!
GRACIE
(smiles)
That's nice!
Gracie takes Johnny's bag of candy and dumps it out onto the counter.
GRACIE
Well, under Barack Obama's redistribution of candy tax plan I'm going to take about half of your candy.
JOHNNY
What?
GRACIE
Honey, you have so much more than the other boys. You should spread the wealth.
JOHNNY
But I worked hard for that candy. I set a goal of collecting two bags of candy this year.
Grace takes half of the candy.
GRACIE
There!
JOHNNY
(disheartened)
But...
Gracie takes a third of her portion of the candy and gives it to JED, a lumpy boy sitting on the couch watching television.
JOHNNY
Why are you giving Jed my candy? He didn't earn it.
GRACIE
As long as Jed doesn't have any candy we're going to take your candy and give it to him. Don't be so selfish!
JOHNNY
I'm not being selfish. If you keep giving my candy to Jed he'll never go out and get any of his own candy.
GRACIE
So?
JOHNNY
Does that mean you'll always take my candy and give it to him, even if he never even gets off the couch?
GRACIE
Yes!
JOHNNY
Why?
GRACIE
It's called socialism, Johnny. It's the foundation of communist countries like China.
JOHNNY
But I thought we were a capatilistic society?
GRACIE
(rubs his head)
Oh, Johnny, you're so retro.
Frustrated, Johnny looks to Jimmy and Jamie.
JOHNNY
(to Jamie)
Jamie, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to hire you.
(to Jimmy)
Jimmy, I'm sorry, but you're fired. If I keep you both on I'll never meet my goal of two bags of candy this year.
GRACIE
(smiles)
That's the spirit!
She bends down hugs the kids tight, all unhappy.
GRACIE
(hugging kids)
Isn't socialism great!
Jed, with a mouth full of candy, raises his hand.
JED
It's awesome!
Gracie smiles brightly. The kids sour.

The Pain of Fear
During Mass this passed Sunday, I was praying about the pain associated with that weight on us and I thought back to the many times in my life where the world had seemed to weigh heavy upon me. After months of trying to fight those tough events and fearing the worst, they always ended up so painful that I would just give the problems up to God.
That moment of release, of choosing faith over fear, was always immediately followed by an incredible sense of release and deep, inner peace.
In talking with DC I explained that it doesn't mean the road will get any easier, only that the Lord will give you the strength to travel it.
During Mass it occurred to me that the pain we feel prior to that moment of trust, that moment of faith, is the pain of holding on so tightly to a problem the Lord is trying to pull from us, a problem of which he already has the solution. The longer we hold on, the tighter we grasp and try to control those areas of life, the more painful it becomes, until finally, we are unable to deal with it anymore. Then, and only then, do we release those problems and allow God to perform his will in our lives.
So, tonight, I learned from my previous lessons and let go early. Take the worries, Lord. Take the weight of fear. Take the pain of holding on to that which I cannot control. Take it. And surprise me with your solution.
I can't wait to see what He comes up with.

Latest Debate
These are the best two candidates? Really?
REALLY?
I don't like either candidate, but I like Obama less... and he'll win.
Hello higher taxes, hello bigger government, hello Freedom of Choice Act which overrides any state laws on abortion, hello socialism, hello ultra-liberal judges, hello national health care, hello inexperienced Commander-in-Chief in the most dangerous time in modern history...
...hello scary times.
Hypocrisy is Thick These Days
President. Of the United States.
The guy's spent seven years in the Illinois State Senate. He's only spent two years as U.S. Senator, most of that time running for the presidency. Two terms as U.S. Prez tops either one of those.
And he's more qualified how, exactly?
And why is Palin "unqualified" and Bill Clinton was "exceptionally qualified" to be President?
- Bill Clinton was a governor of a small state. So is Palin.
- Bill Clinton had minimal foreign policy experience. So does Palin.
- Bill Clinton was married to a man. So is Palin.
- Bill Clinton was the prettiest spouse in the marriage. So is Palin.
Let's not talk about Obama's sketchy past or socialist leanings or communist advisors or Fanny Mae/Freddie Mac ties or his views on unfetered abortions to the point of not even saving a child that survives an abortion attempt. Let's not talk about that.
Let's talk about Palin's daughter's pregnancy. Yeah, that has more impact on the presidency.
The hypocrisy is so blatant and thick and sickening.
I'm not saying Palin is the savior of the Republican party... I just want the media to stop treating Obama as the savior of the nation. He's a man with his own past and his own decisions that deserves the same scrutiny. Period.
The American voter deserves to know ALL the facts, not just the ones that are aligned with the Democrats talking points. Who knows, after such scrutiny, the guy could turn out to be the greatest human to walk the plant earth in nearly 2000 years. But we'll never know.
Gosh, I never thought I'd say this, but "I remember a time when the media mattered."
Seems like a long time ago.

Palin Visit
The morning started at 5:00 a.m. We left the house by 5:30 a.m., made it to the parking and were bused over to Coachman Park by 6:30 a.m. We got prime seats, some 10 yards away from the podium and stood around for the next three hours.
Actually, it wasn't that bad... all of the local speakers started around 7:30 - 8:00 a.m. You could tell the event was important to the GOP because everyone was there... Representative Young, Senator Martinez and Governor Crist. Governor Palin arrived and was introduced by Senator Joe Liberman.
The greatest quality Palin has is her true sincerity. She is just a very nice person. When they walked on stage and everyone was waving and yelling, you could see just how moved she was... she kept leaning over to Liberman and saying "Wow! Wow!" At one point you could actually see in her eyes just how moved she was by the large and enthusiastic turnout.
Her speech was familiar, but impassioned. She layered in off-the-cuff comments, jokes and commented how the Tampa Bay Rays were not given much of a chance to win at the beginning of the season, but they, like the McCain/Palin ticket, would surprise people in the end.
Also, as Dea pointed out, she looks even more beautiful in person. The camera doesn't do her justice.
To prove we were there, can you spot me and Dea in the pic below?
At the end of the speech she spent almost 1/2 hour signing autographs and shaking hands. At one point, she spotted a mother with a special needs child and stopped.
She held the baby in her arms and you could see her mouth to the mother, "They're all special! She'll always be special!"
It was a very sincere, touching moment.
DC was lucky enough to shake her hand as well. Gabe, however, was getting crushed, so we pulled him out and waited for everyone to make their way out.
Okay, give up finding Dea and me? Here we are...
It was a memorable and exhausting experience. I'm glad we had the chance to attend.
We'll have more pics from Dea's camera later.

What if Apostles had Blogs...
"Those dang Ephesians! Will they ever listen to me?"
"Still traveling to Syria. Weather was nice."
"You'll never guess who sprung me from prison... seriously! An angel! I'm not kidding! It was so cool! I've attached pics I took with my phone."
I know, silliness.

Novena... Nearing Mid-Point
It occurred to me the other day, as DC and I were praying the Novena, that perhaps God's Will is to chastise us.
Now, wouldn't that stink?

What If I Played Golf...
My father loved golf. Loved it. As far back as I can remember, my father watched, talked and played golf. Even into his 80’s and struggling with Parkinson’s, he would be eager to show you the latest adjustments to his golf swing. It was his personal passion.
When I was in high school I realized that I really wanted to be an actor. Ever since I was nine years old I wanted to make movies and after getting a taste of the theater at Northeast High, I realized this was my calling.
My father struggled with that idea. Big time. He had an accounting background. My older brothers and sisters were accountants, teachers, managers, analytical chemists, etc. And I wanted to be an actor?????
My family didn’t get it. For my Dad, it simply did not compute.
In my father’s mind, he didn’t want me to make any grave mistakes that would put my future in jeopardy by being an actor. For him, acting wasn’t a career, it was a hobby. It wasn’t a “real” job. It was frivolous at best and irresponsible at worst.
Then he went to the golf course.
He hit a couple of buckets of balls and, on the drive home, was worried about my passion for acting. “Why acting? Why not something normal?” He asked himself. “Hec, if Peter would want to play golf, I could support that!”
A moment later he stopped and asked himself “Why is being a golfer any more valid than being an actor? Why is being an accountant any more valid than being an actor? Just because I think don’t think it’s right doesn’t mean it’s not right for him.”
By the time he got home he had come to terms with my passion. And he supported me completely from that day forward. Instead of fighting me on it, he started to ask questions, to inquire, to learn. He started to watch television shows with a more critical eye and we would discuss what made it a success or failure.
Because my father had a change of heart, it opened up our relationship and took us down paths we never would have experienced otherwise. He once told me that my performance in Broadway Bound at the Hippodrome in Gainesville was one of the most touching moments of his life. He learned to love me for the gifts God had given me instead of trying to force me down a pragmatic path he had envisioned. He attended almost all of my productions and, with every visit backstage, his face beamed, his eyes filled with tears and he would embrace me with a long and heartfelt hug. There was no greater feeling, no applause, no review, no paycheck that even came close to those affirming hugs given to me by my father.
Now, with Sonlight Pictures, I think back to his drive home from the golf course and wonder. What if I had played golf? What if I followed his dream for me instead of God’s plan for me? Where would my path have lead?
When I started Sonlight Pictures, after substantial prayer and discernment, I realized that all of my experiences in my life had been in preparation for this vocation. God gave me these creative passions. Those are my unique gifts, my unique attributes as the greater body of Christ. My acting experience, my behind-the-scenes television experience, my real world project management experience, my health challenges, my faith journey… all have been in preparation for this effort, Sonlight Pictures.
I am just grateful that my father recognized the unique talents that God had given me… and they weren’t accounting and chemistry and teaching… it was acting, writing and directing. And I am even more grateful that he had the wisdom and trust in the Lord to let me follow what God had inspired in me over what he thought I should do with my life.
My father trusted in the Lord with his youngest child and that trust has allowed me to grow beyond my aspirations.
Some twenty-five years later, I look back and think, “Thank goodnes I never liked to play golf.”

Thank you!
When we were shooting these, people kept saying "The Lord has big plans for this." I hope that ends up being true.
It's gratifying to know that all of those hours involved in creating the project has not been done in vain. As I said to the cast and crew just this morning, we can only go down from here! :)
I've been in contact with a couple of youth group leaders locally, Paul is checking with people in Houston and I sent the link to Matt S. at Lifeteen, so we'll see what happens. I think they could be used as a great way to introduce ideas for further discussion as part of the youth ministry. We'll have to wait and see.
Please keep forwarding the PurgatoryUSA.com link to everyone you feel would enjoy the show. We're prepping to begin shooting our fifth episode. We hope to get better at this with each episode. The lessons we learned in the first four will definitely be used in the remaining shows.
Also keep an eye out as we'll be posting interviews online soon in between each episode release.
So, thanks again! Please keep us in your prayers. And keep spreading the word.

Selective Validation
If you read The DaVinci Code or The Third Jesus, you'll find the authors using quotes from the Bible to invalidate the most important event recorded in the book... the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This amazes me... either the Bible is a valid point of reference or it is not.
Now, if you want to use passages in the Bible to analyze inconsistencies within the Bible itself, for example, that makes sense, but you cannot pick and choose the validity of the Bible as a reference.
That's like me examining the Constitution and referencing the first amendment in order to invalidate the second amendment.
I also find it irritatingly humorous when people utilizes discarded versions of writings similar to the those found in the Bible (Dead Sea Scrolls) and give them equal validity to the Bible.
That's like me finding an earlier version of the Declaration of Independence that stated "all Massachusetts born men are created equal" and arguing that it has equal contextual weight, even though the entry was discarded and ignored.
Just because a document was written during the same time frame about the same subject does not mean it is equally valid as the final, approved document. If I find a writing from the time of Moses stating Moses was also a circus clown doesn't make it accurate.
Obviously, when putting together the Bible or the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence, some discernment over accuracy, validity and continuity had to be taken into consideration.
Things aren't discarded by some grand conspiracy... they're discarded because they're simply not good enough.
So, next time your hear arguments utilizing Biblical quotes skewed to attack the divinity of Jesus Christ, ask them to explain themselves. Their response will more than likely be irritatingly humorous.

The Power of Conversion
While saying our 54 Day Novena for the U.S. Elections the other morning, it occurred to me that almost all of these married, faithful friends have one spouse who is a convert to Catholicism. Four out of the five families of which we are the closest find passion and the driving force behind their family Catholic faith through the newest members to our faith.
That is both a blessing to us and a sad reflection of what is lost on cradle Catholics. As one U.S. Bishop said recently, we have to stop looking at Catholicism as a family tradition and realize what it truly is, a faith. So many people are Catholics because their parents were and their grandparents were, etc., but the true beauty of the faith has been lost over the generations.
So, we're left with pews full of people attending mass out of obligation instead of inspiration. They find mass a duty instead of a divine opportunity.
They miss the big picture of which they are surrounded each and every Sunday... unfortunately they are unaware and, therefore, unable to see it.
Just as new citizens of this great country appreciate how good we have it, so do converts to the faith. And from them I find my own faith reinvigorated and, myself, spiritually challenged to join them in their study, their faith formation and their adherence to the doctrines of this wonderfully rich, divinely inspired institution called the Roman Catholic Church.

I'm Grumpy...
I feel like I'm alone trying to move that really big rock up the mountain, with little success.
Ugh...
It's not self pity... it's exhaustion. I'll probably feel like this for a couple of days. Then I'll get over it. Until then, avoid me if you can. You'll be happy you did.

Obama Using Lives of Troops for Political Gain
Busy, Busy...
Things have been busy in the Bauer household recently. Dea and DC have been hit with a flu bug making the rounds. Gabe's Fall Ball season is about to start, so we've been down at the field quite a bit. I've been trying to prepare for a Purgatory, USA premiere for cast/crew and their families as well as working DVD menus for the eventual release of Volume 1.
This past week I finished writing the next two episodes of PUSA, one dealing with Envy and another dealing with the battle between God's Will and Our Will.
In researching a short script idea Paul had sent me about Angels, I finished reading a book called Angels & Devils by Joan Carroll Cruz... she takes all of the references in the Bible as well as from the Saints of any experiences with Angels and/or Devils and puts them into similar groupings, such as what Angels look like, Angels and the Eucharist, etc. It was a very interesting read.
Right now I'm in the middle of another one of Cruz' books called Eucharistic Miracles, which details all of the Eucharistic miracles from Christ through to the mid-1980's, when the book was written. Some of the stories are amazing.
After that I'm going to read another one of Cruz' books called The Incorruptables, about saints who have died and their bodies have remained incorrutable. I have to thank our friend, Darryll Miller, for loaning me the books, as he used to live next door to Mrs. Cruz in Louisiana and has all of her books.
So, things are busy... not exciting, just busy. Hopefully I'll have more interesting stuff later in the week :)

Happy viewing.

Novena Starts Today
So, we're praying that the Lord's will be done in the presidential election. I hope that we can remain in God's graces and protection. So many have politically positioned themselves to make Christianity exclusive of government instead of inclusive. If we keep asking God to leave us alone, one day he'll say Yes.
I don't want to be here on that day.
Let us pray that His will, His grace, His guidance and His peace lead all voters to God's preferred outcome.

Why it's the right time for McCain
Washington, DC is broken. Congress has become so partisan, it has become immobile, as with the Democratic led congress. Or so entrenched with special interests as to become ineffective at solving the real problems facing us, as with the Republican led congress.
Things need a shake-up. A reformer. A change.
Both Presidential candidates offer change, but change in and of itself holds as much potential for bad as it does good. The reality comes down to this...
Obama = Socialism
McCain = Capitalism
Obama continues to take swipes at successful people and successful companies as if the hard work required to become such a success is something to be avoided. His comments are consistently anti-capitalism and pro-socialism, or redistribution of wealth.
McCain thinks the private sector can solve all of our nation's problems if the government would simply get out of the way. He believes we have the brightest minds in the world and the American ingenuity to overcome that to which we collectively put our mind.
McCain reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt, in a way. He's a brash man who will shake things up and hold congress and power brokers accountable to the American people. He said that, if a bill arrives on his desk with pork attached, he'll not only veto the bill but promised he'll let America know who's requesting the excess... he said he'd "make them famous."
That's what we need.
We're at a tipping point in our country, where we will reclaim our capitalistic roots or fall victim to the European socialist model.
And Sarah Palin has the opportunity to redefine feminism... a feminist who embraces all that it is to be a woman, including her own fertility.
This is such an important election, not because of the two people running, per se, but because of where the country will end up four to eight years later.
So, before the election I will begin a 54 day novena that the Lord's will be done. I'll pray 27 days in petition and 27 days in thanksgiving.
I hope all of you can join me in this effort.
We'll be praying for the Lord's will to be done in the election.

Obama and Public Allies - Scary Stuff
Investors Business Daily has a report about a group called Public Allies that Obama helped found and who's wife was executive director. It's a community program that supports non-profit work, but it's methods are questionable, let alone disturbing.
It's a must read!
One of the recruits stated:
"It's a lot of talk about race, a lot of talk about sexism, a lot of talk about homophobia, talk about -isms and phobias."
One of those -isms is "heterosexism," which a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes as a negative byproduct of "capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male-dominated privilege."
The government currently helps fund this program through Clinton's AmeriCorps! And Obama has stated:
"We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the military."
He's talking about funding Public Allies to the equivalent levels of the military. He also states:
"Individual salvation depends on collective salvation."
Doesn't sound Christian to me, does it?
Anti-American, anti-capitalist indoctrination paid by our tax dollars? That's the future if Obama is elected.
And the liberal media knows about Palin's daughter's boyfriend's hobbies, but they haven't investigated Obama after all this time about this???? No agenda there.
Either way, it's scary... very scary.
You can read the entire article HERE.
Purgatory, USA - Done... for now.
Talk about timing. God is good!
Does God want us to make more? Don't know, yet.

Palin Changes Everything
Granted, we never vote in a Presidential election because of the Vice-President, but because of who she is and where she came from, she can say with confidence so many things most Americans have wanted said.
Here are some snippets of her speech last night that I found particularly effective...
I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom and signed up for the PTA.
I love those hockey moms. You know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.
I guess -- I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities.
I might add that, in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they're listening and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening.
No, we tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.
*****
Our opponents say again and again that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems, as if we didn't know that already.
But the fact that drilling, though, won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.
Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we're going to lay more pipelines, and build more nuclear plants, and create jobs with clean coal, and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative sources. We need...
We need American sources of resources. We need American energy brought to you by American ingenuity and produced by American workers.
*****
And now, I've noticed a pattern with our opponent, and maybe you have, too. We've all heard his dramatic speeches before devoted followers, and there is much to like and admire about our opponent.
But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the State Senate.
This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting and never use the word "victory," except when he's talking about his own campaign.
But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed, when the roar of the crowd fades away, when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot...
When that happens, what exactly is our opponent's plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish after he's done turning back the waters and healing the planet?
The answer -- the answer is to make government bigger, and take more of your money, and give you more orders from Washington, and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world.
*****
Here's how I look at the choice Americans face in this election: In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.
They are the ones whose names appear on laws and landmark reforms, not just on buttons and banners or on self-designed presidential seals.
*****
This world of threats and dangers, it's not just a community and it doesn't just need an organizer. And though both Senator Obama and Senator Biden have been going on lately about how they're always, quote, "fighting for you," let us face the matter squarely: There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you.
There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you in places where winning means survival and defeat means death. And that man is John McCain.
*****
The real test will be when she spares with Biden during a debate. But, right now, wow, I wouldn't want to face her.
